The World of the Historical Fiction Internet

One of the single most interesting aspects of the Internet is the fact that for many genres, it is the place where you are most likely to find first rate original fiction being published. Currentlly, there are only genres, Fantasy, Mystery and Science Fiction for which there are professional magazines. Add to that you have the so-called literary mainsteam that is published in magazines such as The New Yorker. As a result, the main place that you can find quality original fiction is on the Internet. To be sure, there are a few published print periodicals that do publish original genre fiction, but but those outlets are in a state of decline as are the professional magazines.

Up to about a decade ago, the Historical Fiction genre had hardly any presence on the Internet. Prior to 2009, the Copperfield Review was the only webzine publishing original Historical Fiction. It was such a minor league effort that it was not util 2012 that its published works were even archived. Even today it is not an especially substantive enterprise given that it has a strict limit of 3,000 words for its stories. In other words, it publishes only short-short stories. A far more significant effort is this writer's Magazine of History & Fiction (H&F). H&F is a webzine that accepts articles and stories that are as long as 25,000 words aka novellas. However, H&F has only published one issue thus far so its unclear what its long term impact will be.

As things stand, most of the action in the Historical Fiction genre on the Internet is in the Westerns sub-genre. Both the most significant Historical Fiction webzine and one of the most significant Historical Fiction oriented websites specialize in Westerns. These places are the Frontier Tales webzine that accepts stories of up to 10,000 words in length and the Westerns entertainment website Rope & Wire.

All in all, the Historical Fiction Internet offers a great deal of interesting and quality reading for your literary pleasure. If you're ever bored with nothng to do, take a gander at these webzines and find out for yourself if they are what the doctor ordered.
